Welcome to New York

I was thrilled to be able to see a screening of Welcome to New York, an award-winning comedic short film by Steven Tylor O'Connor. The film is a series of shorts, each one depicting the experiences of five New Yorkers. These experiences, all offered up to therapist Dr. Kitty Rosenblatt (played by Sherry Vine) for her advice and judgement, vary from character ro character, but they all have one thing in common: life in the Big Apple might not be easy, but it's never dull!

Although only thirty minutes, we are drawn into the characters, and it's a testament to their acting and O'Connor's direction that in such a short time, we feel such a connection. We are rooting for them, rooting for them to find love and happiness in spite of all the pervy deli workers and bus stop crack whores out there. This is New York – a random encounter can always lead to true love (just make sure you remember their name).

Sherry Vine sizzles, and her role as the therapist of these naive young New Yorkers unifies the film. Her personality cannot be contained by the confines of her fictional office or by the screen, and she really leaps out and grabs you (don't make her take her earrings off!).

Sean Paul Lockhart transcends adorable. Yes, if you've read my reviews of Big Gay Musical or Judas Kiss, you know I am already predisposed to turn any review into an Ode to Sean Paul Lockhart, but there's something even more endearing about his role as Jake. Sweet and sexy, he captures your heart (He can call me Cupcake anytime!) Plus, he has great taste in books - be sure to watch for the cameo appearance of Gulliver Takes Manhattan!

Ashleigh Murray, Lauren Ordair, Matthew Watson, Megan Kane, Alex Ringler, and Casper Andreas round out this cast, and you will find yourself dying for a sequel. Do Ryan and Simone meet? Does Cassie punch out anyone else? Is it true love for Jake and Cupcake? And what of Dr. Rosenblatt – who is she and who's her daddy?

If you get the chance to see this, do it, and keep your eye out for O'Connor. He has more treats in store for us, I'm sure. Welcome to New York!
