Rock of Ages
Broadway Across Canada delivers again, with their production of Rock of Ages. Although it's only playing here til the 11th, if you can't catch it here, catch it somewhere else on its tour, as this is one heck of a talented ensemble.
If you like musicals with dramatic plots and well-developed characters, then this really isn't for you. But if you want a trip down a musical memory lane, with fun characters, silly subplots, and a bunch of rockers not taking themselves too seriously, this is the show for you!
Rock of Ages is the story of a small-town girl, living in a lonely world, and a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit, who end up in LA at the infamous Bourbon Room, one of those clubs that helped build a city on rock and roll. Sherrie and Drew meet under the watchful eye of club owner Dennis Dupris, and their love affair hits its first snag in the person of Legend of Rock Stacee Jaxx. Meanwhile, Hertz and Franz have flown in from Germany to help the Mayor of LA clean up the Sunset Strip, a process which requires the demolition of every building along it, including the Bourbon Room.
The cast is incredible, and stars the dreamy Dominique Scott as Drew and the gorgeous Shannon Mullen as Sherrie (we first saw Sherrie stealing scenes as Brooke Wyndham in BAC's Legally Blonde two years ago). Matt Ban delivers a strong performance as Dennis, Amma Osei shines as Mama, Stephen Michael Kane flames triumphantly as Franz, and Justin Colombo ties it all together as Lonny the narrator.
It's hard to find your way in a world of sex and rock and roll, and sometimes you lose sight of what's really important. Fame is bright and big and beautiful and shining there, and everyone wants to be a star. But there's another kind of dream: love. And sometimes you can't have both.
Everyone on the Sunset Strip might have a dream, but the dream you came there with isn't always the one you leave with. This is all set to a soundtrack of Journey and Poison and Whitesnake and Europe and Extreme and more. You remember how frickin' awesome 80s music is (and you get a reminder how horrid some 80s fashions were!)
If you're looking for nothing but a good time, it don't get better than this!
This has been a bobert review.
